Gotta Have Gadget!

The first round of the 2008 season and I am starring at a second shot into a Par 5 with a distance of 265 yards. The greens are small and very fast, so my best bet is to hit it into the greenside bunker.I figured this would give me the best opportunity for an up and down birdie.  The only problem that stands between my birdie and me is I tend to slice my 3-wood.

The good thing was my old 3-wood was home in my basement, the difficult part was this is one heck of a shot to test the new Adams Golf Insight XTD Hybrid-Fairway wood. I had a good lie in the fairway and said to myself, “well it’s now or never”.

I had hit the Insight XTD on the range and made very solid contact. However, every golfer knows the range is one thing, when the shot count it’s another.

I was debating if I should play the slice or trust what I had done on the range. Being the first round of the year, my score wasn’t that great so I decided to take aim at the middle of the bunker and let loose.

Oh, did I forget to mention I had to carry at least 245 yards to get over the water hazard?? So after all this debate, the green clears and it’s time to step up to the plate.  I pull the XTD out of the bag and take a couple of practice swings.

The club feels good in my hand, and somehow I knew that if I could make solid contact I had a chance. When I address the ball, my last thought is always, “trust your swing”. I know I have the distance to carry the water hazard, I know there is nothing standing in my way to work the ball exactly where I need too in order to make my birdie. I take a slow backswing and drive through the ball; I knew right away I hit it solid.

I watched as the ball started low and worked exactly as I had thought out the shot in my head. The ball carries the water hazard, and I start to think this has a shot to make it to the green. In air, the ball lands a foot from the top of the bunker and rolls back for a perfect lie in the trap. To my best estimate the ball carried 255 yards straight as an arrow.  Now I know what you are thinking, “yeah but you are in the trap!”

However it was exactly where I wanted to be. I immediately place the club back into the bag and knew this would be the beginning of many of Eagle opportunities down the road. I stepped up to the sand trap, blasted the ball out to within 5 feet and blew the putt! Heck for the first round of the season, I will take a tap-in par any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Based on this one shot, my confidence in the Adams Golf XTD Hybrid-Fairway Wood was at an all-time high. I knew I had three more Par 5’s coming up and a couple of tight shots off the tee that I may need this club again.

When you have a high quality club in your bag, and the confidence to pull it out at any point is a powerful weapon in the game of golf. Stepping up to a tee box with a tight fairway and hazards all around I will walk up with confidence knowing I have the Adams XTD Hybrid-Fairway 3-wood in my bag. I can honestly say that confidence wasn’t there in my previous 3-wood.

I am looking forward to this season!!
